MillBooksTMmaintains a database not only of products for sale, which are the elements used to populate invoices, but also of the ingredients and recipes from which the products are made.
Each product is made of one or more ingredients, with each product composing a certain % of the final product. Each product has a $ cost/lb and weight associated with the % used in the product. If you follow the logic through, you can use this information as follows:
Product pricing
Based on the weight and composition of the ingredients, you can get a total final weight for the product, and also the “cost of goods sold” (COGS) for the product. Given a desired markup for the different elements and ingredients of the product, you can use this to determine what your desired pricing should be.
Ordering ingredients
Given a set of invoices needed to be delivered in matter of days, each invoice having a quantity of products, and given the recipe for each product, which has a quantity of ingredients, a report can be generated that gives a list of all ingredients, with quantities of each, that will be required to produce the products slated for delivery.
